Why did people create myths?
The reason the people in ancient civilizations made myths/gods were because they didn't understand some things. They didn't understand some things in nature because THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE BRAINS FOR IT! No. Just kidding. It was because they didn't have the technology that we have in the 21 first century. They found it easier to just create a fictional story with gods, goddesses, and monsters that had powers to do unrealistic things. That way, they would have an answer for everything! LAZY BRAINS!
E.g. If we didn't have the technology and sense of why grass grows, we would create a god (let's call him Bob) and we would give Bob the powers to make grass grow or the powers to make plants grow or he would be the goddess of nature or the goddess of growth.
Another reason for the mythical creatures is because every god has to have a story and in each story there is a problem. In this case, the monsters would be the problem (some times). The monster's looks gets passed on from person to person but the people add variations to the creature.
E.g. The first person tells the second person that he saw a monster, the size of an elephant. He had 25 horns on head, three tails with millions of spikes on each of them, and he had a soft shell. Then the second person could pass along the message and tell the third person but add or take away stuff from the creature; He was the size of a Brachiosaurus! He had a hard spikey back, 25 tails, and his head was part of his abdomen. Then the third person could tell the 4 person and twist around the truth but this paragraph is getting a little long and it's not very necessary for me to tell you another description of a creature. You get the point.
